Families are complex, beautiful, and sometimes deeply challenging. Family therapy helps you navigate conflict, improve communication, and build stronger bonds — together.
Book a SessionEvery family has its own unique dynamics, history, and patterns of relating. When those patterns become painful — when conflict escalates, communication breaks down, or family members feel disconnected — family therapy can help.
At Palmero Counselling, we offer compassionate, evidence-based family therapy in Stoney Creek, Hamilton, Grimsby, and virtually across Ontario. Our registered psychotherapist Ellis Palmero works with families to understand the patterns that are causing difficulty and to develop healthier, more connected ways of relating to one another.
Family therapy can support families through a wide range of challenges, including:
Family therapy is grounded in the understanding that individuals are best understood within the context of their family system. When one family member is struggling, it affects everyone. And when the family system changes, every member benefits.
Structural Family Therapy focuses on understanding and reshaping the patterns and boundaries within the family system. It helps families develop clearer roles, healthier hierarchies, and more effective ways of organizing themselves.
Narrative Therapy helps family members explore the stories they tell about themselves and each other — and to rewrite those stories in ways that are more empowering and compassionate. Narrative approaches are particularly helpful for families where one member has been labelled as "the problem."
Solution-Focused Therapy helps families identify their strengths and build on what is already working, rather than focusing exclusively on problems. This approach is collaborative, forward-looking, and often produces rapid positive change.
Communication Skills Training provides practical tools for expressing needs clearly, listening actively, and navigating disagreements without escalation — skills that benefit every family member.
Family therapy can involve any combination of family members. The therapist will discuss with you who should attend based on the specific concerns and goals. In some cases, all family members attend together; in others, sessions may alternate between the whole family and individual members. Not every family member needs to attend every session.
Sessions are 50–80 minutes and are available in-person at our Stoney Creek office or virtually via secure video for families anywhere in Ontario.
Family therapy is a form of psychotherapy that involves multiple family members working together with a therapist to improve communication, resolve conflict, and strengthen relationships. It is based on the understanding that individuals are best understood in the context of their family system, and that change in one part of the system affects the whole.
Family therapy can involve any combination of family members — parents and children, siblings, blended families, or extended family members. The therapist will discuss with you who should attend based on the specific concerns and goals. Not all family members need to attend every session.
Family therapy can help with parent-child conflict, sibling conflict, communication breakdown, blended family challenges, navigating divorce or separation, supporting a family member with mental health challenges, grief and loss, and major life transitions. It can also help families develop stronger bonds and healthier patterns of relating.
