What Is Individual Therapy?

Individual therapy — also called one-on-one therapy or personal counselling — is a collaborative process between you and a registered psychotherapist. Unlike group therapy or couples therapy, individual sessions are focused entirely on you: your unique history, your current challenges, and your personal goals.

At Palmero Counselling, individual therapy sessions are offered in-person at our Stoney Creek office and virtually for clients anywhere in Ontario. Our registered psychotherapist Ellis Palmero brings warmth, expertise, and genuine care to every session, creating a space where you can be fully honest and fully yourself.

What Can Individual Therapy Help With?

Individual therapy can support you through a wide range of life challenges and mental health concerns. People come to individual therapy for many different reasons, including:

  • Anxiety, worry, panic, and phobias
  • Depression, low mood, and loss of motivation
  • Stress and burnout
  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Grief and loss
  • Relationship difficulties and communication challenges
  • Low self-esteem and self-worth
  • Life transitions — career changes, moving, divorce, retirement
  • Identity and personal growth
  • Anger management and emotional regulation
  • Sleep difficulties related to mental health
  • General feelings of being stuck, unfulfilled, or disconnected

You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from individual therapy. Many people seek therapy simply because they want to understand themselves better, develop healthier patterns, or navigate a challenging period of life with greater clarity and support.

Our Approach

Individual therapy at Palmero Counselling is tailored to your unique needs. We draw on a range of evidence-based approaches, selecting and integrating techniques that are most relevant to your specific concerns and goals.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) helps you identify and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours that are contributing to distress. CBT is practical, structured, and highly effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) focuses on developing psychological flexibility — learning to accept difficult thoughts and feelings rather than fighting them, while committing to actions that align with your values.

Mindfulness-Based Approaches help you develop greater present-moment awareness and a more compassionate relationship with your inner experience.

Trauma-Informed Care ensures that all therapy is delivered with sensitivity to the impact of past experiences, creating a safe and empowering therapeutic environment.

"Individual therapy is not about being fixed — it's about being understood. It's a space where you can slow down, look inward, and discover the clarity and strength that was always within you."

What to Expect

Your first session is a chance to share what's brought you to therapy and what you're hoping to achieve. There's no pressure to have everything figured out — we'll explore together. From there, we'll develop a personalized plan that fits your life, your schedule, and your goals.

Sessions are 50 minutes and are available in-person at 800 Queenston Rd, Unit 210B, Stoney Creek, or virtually via secure video for clients anywhere in Ontario. Evening and flexible appointment times are available.
