Recovering from Stress and Burnout

We live in a culture that glorifies busyness and productivity — often at the expense of our health, relationships, and wellbeing. Chronic stress and burnout have become increasingly common, affecting people across all professions and walks of life. If you've been running on empty for too long, you are not alone — and you don't have to keep pushing through.

At Palmero Counselling, we offer compassionate, evidence-based therapy for stress and burnout in Stoney Creek, Hamilton, Grimsby, and virtually across Ontario. Our registered psychotherapist Ellis Palmero helps clients understand the roots of their stress, develop sustainable coping strategies, and rebuild a life that feels meaningful and manageable.

Signs You May Be Experiencing Burnout

Burnout develops gradually — often so slowly that you don't notice it until you're completely depleted. Common signs of burnout include:

  • Persistent exhaustion that doesn't improve with rest
  • Feeling emotionally drained, detached, or numb
  • Cynicism, negativity, or loss of motivation
  • Reduced sense of accomplishment or effectiveness
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Increased irritability, impatience, or emotional reactivity
  • Physical symptoms — headaches, muscle tension, frequent illness
  • Withdrawing from colleagues, friends, or family
  • Dreading work or responsibilities you once found meaningful
  • Neglecting your own needs — sleep, nutrition, exercise, relationships

Burnout is not a sign of weakness or failure. It is a predictable response to prolonged, unsustainable demands — and it is treatable.

Common Sources of Stress and Burnout

Stress and burnout can arise from many different areas of life. We support clients experiencing burnout related to:

  • Workplace burnout — overwork, lack of control, toxic environments, or misalignment with values
  • Caregiver burnout — exhaustion from caring for children, aging parents, or loved ones with illness
  • Parenting stress — the relentless demands of raising children, often without adequate support
  • Academic burnout — pressure, perfectionism, and overwhelm in educational settings
  • Life transition stress — major changes such as moving, job loss, relationship breakdown, or health challenges
  • Chronic stress — ongoing financial, relational, or health-related stressors

Our Approach to Stress and Burnout Therapy

Recovery from burnout is not just about taking a vacation or sleeping more — though rest is important. True recovery requires understanding what led to burnout, making meaningful changes, and developing a more sustainable relationship with work, responsibility, and yourself.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) helps identify and challenge the thought patterns that contribute to chronic stress — such as perfectionism, people-pleasing, difficulty saying no, and catastrophizing. CBT also provides practical tools for managing stress more effectively.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) helps you clarify your values and make choices that align with what truly matters to you — rather than being driven by fear, obligation, or the expectations of others. ACT is particularly helpful for people who feel trapped in roles or situations that are depleting them.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) teaches evidence-based mindfulness practices that reduce the physiological and psychological impact of stress. Regular mindfulness practice can significantly lower cortisol levels, improve sleep, and increase resilience.

Boundary Setting and Assertiveness Skills are often central to burnout recovery. Many people who experience burnout struggle to set limits on their time and energy. Therapy provides a safe space to explore why this is difficult and to develop the skills and confidence to create healthier boundaries.

"Burnout is not a badge of honour. It is a signal — from your body, your mind, and your soul — that something needs to change. Therapy helps you listen to that signal and respond with wisdom rather than willpower."

What to Expect in Stress and Burnout Therapy

Your first session is a conversation about what you're experiencing and what you hope to change. We will explore the specific stressors in your life, the patterns that have contributed to burnout, and what a more sustainable, fulfilling life might look like for you.

Sessions are 50 minutes and are available in-person at our Stoney Creek office (800 Queenston Rd, Unit 210B) or virtually via secure video for clients anywhere in Ontario. Virtual sessions are particularly convenient for people experiencing burnout, as they eliminate the need to travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is burnout?

Burnout is a state of chronic exhaustion — physical, emotional, and mental — caused by prolonged exposure to stress, particularly in work or caregiving contexts. It is characterized by three core dimensions: exhaustion, cynicism or detachment, and a reduced sense of personal accomplishment. Burnout is not a personal failing — it is a predictable response to unsustainable demands.

How is burnout different from stress?

Stress is typically characterized by too much — too many demands, too much pressure. Burnout is characterized by too little — too little energy, motivation, and hope. Stress can often be relieved by rest; burnout is more persistent and requires deeper recovery. Therapy can help with both.

Can therapy help with burnout?

Yes. Therapy is an effective tool for recovering from burnout. A therapist can help you understand the factors that led to burnout, develop healthier boundaries and coping strategies, process the emotional toll of burnout, and create a sustainable path forward. Therapy also addresses any underlying anxiety or depression that often accompanies burnout.

Is virtual stress and burnout therapy available in Ontario?

Yes. Palmero Counselling offers secure virtual therapy sessions for stress and burnout for clients anywhere in Ontario. Virtual sessions are particularly convenient for people experiencing burnout, as they eliminate the need to travel.
